Curious, I am very much not of this world but in it and I am still living for the party, albeit a very different kind of celebration!
I would like to comment here, if I may regarding tears... and grieving...in fact all of our emotions are a very personal thing. Society has placed such baggage on us in the way of programs and beliefs about when we "should feel what".
Free to be me...Wheeeee !
I have realized that grieving is not about the being who has left but about what we are experiencing in relationship to the incident/event. If we use our energy to focus on everything everyone around us is going thru all of the time, we would never be feeling happy. Some cultures live in each other's emotional pockets. People who are empaths (...and I happen to be one) have major lessons to learn around being able to separate the difference between feeling their own feelings and feeling someone else's feelings. There are stories I could tell...lol
Just in case you hadn't noticed, we never really understand to the depths of what we are asking or seeking...how could we or we wouldn't be asking or seeking, we would be experiencing...there is no being prepared ! lol Just jump in the water is fine !

I found great depth in what you mentioned about living in other's emotional pockets. I am empathic too, and I can feel other's feelings as if they are my own. (Isn't everyone like this?) It has taken me a long time to disentangle the strands of responsibility because I know I create my own experience of reality. So, I couldn't push anything away and lived for a long time by sacrificing and believing in self-sacrifice as holy.
One day, inexplicably, my inner divine said, "Enough". "You are enough. You always have been. You don't need to give yourself away to become more. All come forth whole, though you appear to see many parts, and you think one part has more or less truth than another. You can't earn truth, for your life is truth, everyday." My discernment began to click on when I stopped believing I was incomplete and I began noticing how many, many social pockets of emotional baggage are passed around and redramatized unconsciously, stories based on what one doesn't want are awefully popular in the cultural milieu. Happily, there are whisperers like you!
I love how you say, just jump in the water. And that is I think, the biggie, TRUST. And I would offer this as Self-Trust for you are the center of god/goddess living through you. I only learn to trust by jumping into the mystery and seeing what happens next. I think we have been trying too hard at everything, and need to just let ourselves drift until we feel like acting and doing. I find that kind of surrender in my daily life means that when I work, I get a great deal accomplished rapidly and feel honored by the task. I am now focused on the joy of life and not on accomplishment. Rather than maintaining a to-do list, I keep a mental have-done list and am amazed at what I see; rather than dispirited by how much there is I haven't done, I am simply full of gratitude for my time. Life is such a gift, ooh, you know, the PRESENT.
Here on the Whispers playground, I get to talk with my buddies about real feelings and real surrenderings. I don't try here because there are no rules except treat others as yourself, because they are your other selves. And when I write, I never know what will come forth, but it lifts me, like swinging on the playground always did.

I do feel that empathy is a possibility for all...but many choose mind over feelings and so close that door to feeling others feelings too. Part of it has to do with how we use our energy bodies. Some draw their energy body way in..and others have theirs way out.
By regulating the distant our bodies are out also regulates how much we feel of others feelings. An interesting example is getting on an elevator in a business community area. People want privacy as they are packed in to such close areas and cubicles. When they get on the elevator they pull their energy bodies within an inch of their physical body so as not to be in another's energy field.
You can use your energy body way out to be a care taker of others, which you have called self sacrifice. You can have your energy body way out to know what is going on within a certain radius around you. Those who are in martial arts usually are very skilled with this. They are not the only ones. Children will have their energy body way out to know what is going on to keep them self safe if they live in an environment that is abusive in some way. Babies use it to locate a parent/ care giver and let them know they have a need without any vocal contact. Mothers do this to check up on children. There are many reasons to use this ability. Unless we have entered into our Heart Space and are living inside out, this ability will be used for survival in some way. Those who self sacrifice are surviving by caring for others at the sacrifice of themselves to themselves....and yet curiously it is for themselves that they do it for appreciation because they haven't learned to love themselves or are taught that that is being selfish. I have been one of those .
I have learned how to send my energy body distances from me to gather information or communicate.
I am only touching the tip of the ice burg where empathy is concerned, but I think I have opened the door wide enough to share a look at a few possibilities.
Your description of social pockets is wonderful :) ...and I would add that the more drama and self sacrifice we could add to the story the more important it would feel...and the political arena is using that very powerfully just now in telling fear stories.
Ahhh yes Trust...and especially of the Self, for only with Self Trust can it be safe enough to know True Balance as well. Where there is Trust there is no resistance...and yes things flow with great ease then and without efforting at anything. If it feels like work then we have made it be work. The same scenario... but can be experienced so differently from different platforms of consciousness.When we make something be work, it is often that we are not valuing our self and need to justify our self with the actions we have efforted .
Ohhhh that swinging brings back such memories. I use to make the swing go very high and just loved the feeling like flying you could have from doing that. We had two tall elm trees where the swing was setup on the crotch of the trunks and you could swing very high ...and the pigtails I hated so...so when braids became the vogue, I didn't like them either...since then I have learned to appreciate them but still don't wear my hair that way. :)

"be prepared". Just an expression. No there is no preparation, otherwise we might be putting up walls.
I agree about the grieving process. Let the feelings come, don't try to analyze or fight them. Invite them deep into your inner Space, lots of room there, nothing for sticky notes to cling to there. These feelings then blend into the ocean of your Presence/True Self, transmuted.
Or else we can become selfish with our grievous feelings

Hi Bruce...did you know that we are called the builders by dolphins and whales ...and great wall builders..look at that huge megalithic one in China...or the one in Berlin. Can you imagine trying to build walls under water??? I am sure if there is a way to do it, humans will design and build one ! lol

Bruce, Did you ever see the film, Bruce Almighty? There is a scene when he has taken over the job of being God, where he is looking for a way to handle prayers...and he has the idea of sticky notes...let it be so number one ! (couldn't resist that !lol an old Star Trek fan :)) and with the thought, everything is covered with yellow sticky notes with prayer requests. Walls, ceiling, furniture, Bruce...even the dog is covered. Yup no "stucky" notes in Heart Space.
